Self-Care: Put Crying on Your To-Do List

Life can be unpredictable and chaotic, especially these days. It is important to take time for yourself. Like most things in life, self-care is on a spectrum. It looks different for each of us. Whatever you need is what it is.

“Tears are words the mouth can’t say nor can the heart bear.” — Joshua Wisenbaker

It was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and like most people, I was feeling very emotional. Emotional about the past year, emotional about the lives lost, emotional about the injustices of the world, and emotional that I couldn’t see my family. Then the song that will make any person tear up came on—”Fix You” by Coldplay. That’s when I decided what I really needed to do right in that moment was just feel my emotions, to let them out through tears. And the most important thing was acknowledging the feelings, not judging them, and observing them for what they were.

To say I felt good after I had that crying session would be the biggest understatement. It was cathartic. I felt relieved, hopeful… better. I realized that this is exactly what we all need to be doing. So maybe you aren’t a crier, but it’s just about letting yourself feel whatever it is in that moment. Being as present as possible in that moment. Then having that overwhelming sense of calm and peace after letting those feelings go.
