Justin Berk, MD MBA MPH
Assistant Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Epidemiology

Dr. Berk is a member of the core faculty of the Brown Med-Peds program and is a clinic preceptor. He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins with a focus on urban health primary care. He completed his undergraduate and MPH at Yale and his MD/MBA at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He has a passion for primary care, addiction medicine, and medical education. He is a producer of the internal medicine podcast, “The Curbsiders”, and founder of the pediatrics podcast, “The Cribsiders.”

Justin was born in Tennessee, raised in Texas, will always love Baltimore, and is grateful for his new home in Rhode Island. Justin enjoys spending time at coffee shops, running short distances, thinking about hiking, and sharing an office with the incredibly delightful Matt Lorenz. 

Sybil Cineas, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Medical Science
Pronouns: she/her

Dr. Cineas is the Associate Program Director for the Brown Med-Peds Residency Program.  She is a graduate of Georgetown University and Harvard Medical School. She completed her Med-Peds residency at the Harvard Combined Program (BWH/Children’s Hospital/MGH).  She joined the faculty in 1999 and has been an advisor and mentor to many classes of Brown Med-Peds residents. She oversees the Med-Peds ambulatory experience for the residents including the curriculum, a focused Enhanced Primary Care Rotation (E-PCR) for second year residents, and Med-Peds focused block rotations. She also enjoys working with and mentoring medical students. Dr. Cineas serves as a Career in Medicine faculty advisor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is currently an Assistant Director for the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) as part of the medical school’s new Primary Care-Population Medicine track.  She is active in the National Med-Peds Program Directors Association – where she has presented her piloted Enhanced Primary Care curriculum. Dr. Cineas is the recipient of multiple teaching awards including the 2011 Department of Medicine Beckwith Family Teaching award. Since 1999, Dr. Cineas has been a regular volunteer at the Rhode Island Free Clinic and serves on the clinic’s Medical Advisory Committee. Dr. Cineas serves on the Office of Diversity and Minority Affairs Advisory Group and is an advisor to the Brown Minority House Staff Association (BMHA).  She also has a strong interest in international health and has participated in clinical experiences in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Armenia.

Melinda Delaney, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics
Pronouns: she/her

Dr. Delaney is one of our newest faculty of the Brown Med-Peds program. She completed residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she completed the UPMC Medical Education Program. Dr. Delaney received her medical degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where she had a focus in urban underserved medicine. She is originally from southeastern Michigan and completed her undergraduate degree in Biology with high honors at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She has a passion for underserved medicine, quality improvement, and medical education.

In addition to being faculty and a clinic preceptor at our Medicine-Pediatrics Primary Care Center she also works as an attending at the Rhode Island Free Clinic, where she became medical director in 2023. In her free time she enjoys running on all the bike paths in Rhode Island, traveling, and spending fall Saturdays decked out in maize and blue for college football season.

Vincent DiMaggio, MD MS
Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics

Dr. DiMaggio is the most recent addition to the Brown Med-Peds Family! Vinny returns to New England where he was an undergraduate at Boston College. After a year of clinical research back home in NYC, Vinny attended the Special Master’s Program in Physiology & Biophysics at Georgetown. He remained in DC to attend Georgetown University School of Medicine where he fell in love with Med-Peds. Vinny completed residency at The University of Chicago, where was inducted into AOA for clinical teaching and completed a Fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics. He also spent a year as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. During that year, his work focused on redesigning the program conference curriculum. Vinny went on to join faculty at UChicago Medicine where he endeavored to develop a High-Risk Transitions Clinic within the Comprehensive Care Program in collaboration with a Federally Qualified Health Center on the South Side of Chicago. Additionally, he served as Faculty for the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, supervising attending physician in the Comer Children’s Hospital Pediatrics Emergency Department, and teaching attending for inpatient general medicine at UChicago Medicine.

Vinny is passionate about medical education. He practices and precepts in the Brown Med-Peds Primary Care Clinic as well as a teaching hospitalist at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. His clinical and academic interests include Transitions Medicine and care for the underserved.

Vinny is excited to come to Rhode Island with his young family! When not at work, he’ll hopefully be outdoors with his wife, daughter, and dog, Bo – hoping they all start to share his love of salt water in the Ocean State!

Nicholas Grumbach, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics
Pronouns: he/him

Dr. Grumbach is a graduate and former chief resident of the Medicine-Pediatrics Residency at Brown. He received his medical degree from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, where he was raised, after graduating from Bowdoin College, honoring in Biology and History. He has held various jobs, including working on a whale watching boat in Bar Harbor, Maine, as a ski instructor in Vail, Colorado, and even as a unionized elevator operator in NYC’s midtown during high school. He previously practiced at Anchor Medical Associates in Warwick, RI, for 18 years where he served as Physician Chief, and has been precepting at the Medicine Pediatrics Primary Care Center since he completed residency. He volunteers regularly at Amos House in Providence.

Nick has 3 children, all native Rhode Islanders, and his wife, Elizabeth, is a science teacher in Providence. He is one of a growing number of Med-Peds-trained clinician educators in practice in Rhode Island. Nick is a recipient of the Alpert Medical School’s Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He serves on a couple of Rhode Island Department of Health committees, one by appointment by former Governor Gina Raimondo. Nick is also pursuing biomedical and medical entrepreneurship, mentoring and advising at Brown’s Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship and at the Social Enterprise Greenhouse in Providence. 

Matthew Lorenz, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics
Pronouns: he/him

Dr. Lorenz is the Associate Program Director for the Med-Peds residency program. He attended medical school at the University of Tennessee and Med-Peds residency training at Brown (Class of 2019), where he completed the Clinician Educator Track and BRIGHT pathway. He splits his clinical time between the Med-Peds continuity clinic, where he took over leadership of the refugee clinic in 2021, and Rhode Island Hospital / Hasbro Children’s Hospital, working as a teaching hospitalist on both pediatrics and internal medicine. He is a recipient of the Department of Pediatrics’ Medical Student Teaching Award and the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He is passionate about medical education, refugee health, and narrative medicine.

Matt loves the outdoors, traveling, houseplants, a good campfire, and getting the best of his office-mate, Justin Berk.

Suzanne McLaughlin, MD MSc
Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics
Pronouns: she/her

Suzanne McLaughlin is the Program Director for the Brown Med-Peds Residency Program. She received her undergraduate degree in International Studies from the Johns Hopkins University. After working in prenatal care at People’s Community Health Center and prenatal cytogenetics at Johns Hopkins, she received her Masters in Maternal and Child Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and her MD from the University of Connecticut. She completed Med-Peds residency training here at Brown, and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. Her clinical research interests are in health care transition and care delivery in primary care settings, her work has been supported by the Picker Institute, Gold Foundation and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She collaborates with the National Health Care Transition Research Consortium and is an Academic Pediatric Association Educational Scholar. She received the 2014 Department of Medicine Beckwith Family Teaching award and is the physician-champion for our clinic’s grant supported Patient Centered Medical Home initiative.

Kristin Anderson, MD
Assistant Professor Medicine and Pediatrics
Pronouns: she/her

Dr. Anderson is an attending physician within the Medical Psychiatric Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She has a baccalaureate of arts in Anthropology from Skidmore College and is an AOA inductee through Albany Medical College. While a Med-Peds resident at Brown, she conceived and founded the Young Doctors Club and undertook research in program development promoting healthy eating. She provides direct care and precepting in Med-Peds clinic as well as supporting resident advocacy and continuing in her own role as CEO of FIT Club for Kids (Teachfitclub.org). She has authored curriculum on health policy and practice management with an ongoing commitment to didactic teaching. 

Kimberly Babb, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine,. Clinician Educator Track

Dr. Babb is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Clinician Educator with Brown Medicine, where she practices general internal medicine with a focus on women’s medicine. She attended medical school at Boston University and completed her Med-Peds residency training at the University of Michigan. 

Alexander Diaz de Villalvilla, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine

After finishing my Med-Peds residency training at Brown in 2012, I stayed on in the Brown General Internal Medicine Division as a teaching attending on wards and clinic. Seeking more direct patient care, I moved to Montefiore in the Bronx, New York, working as a primary care physician in General Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, and teaching residents and med students, which was a great privilege and educational challenge. I returned to the Rhode Island area in June 2019 to work at Medical Associates of Rhode Island (MARI) / Bristol Medical Center as a full-time adult PCP,  and work on being a more efficient, streamlined, and effective doctor. Thankfully, I have returned to teaching on wards and the Doctoring Program at Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This has allowed me to continue my interests in teaching physical diagnosis and the doctor-patient encounter, and follow some of my broad generalist urges while maintaining my love of medical esoterica and difficult diagnoses.

Megan Douglas, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Douglas is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. After completing her residency at UMass Medical Center, she practiced Med-Peds primary care and served as the assistant residency director at UMass before moving to Rhode Island. For the past 15 years, she has practiced Med-Peds primary care in Rehoboth, MA, and now serves as the medical director of the Med-Peds/Family Practice office there. In addition to practicing medicine and working with Brown medical students, she is very active in her community, serving on the Barrington School Committee, directing local Girl Scout troops, being a member of a local artist cooperative and giving the annual Puberty talk for the 4th and 5th graders at Hampden Meadows School. Most recently, she has served as an active member of the Barrington Public Schools Re-Entry Task Force.

Dana Guyer, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine, Clinician Educator Track

Dr. Guyer is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics and palliative medicine. Dr. Guyer received her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN. She remained at Vanderbilt for her residency in Med-Peds as well as her palliative care fellowship. She worked as a primary care physician on Martha’s Vineyard for three years prior to coming to Brown. She works in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine as a palliative care consultant and as the division head of Palliative and Supportive Oncology at the Lifespan Cancer Institute. Her clinical and research interests include palliative care for hematology and oncology patients, including early integration of palliative care into the routine care of cancer patients, and palliative care education.

Erica Hardy, MD MA MMSc
Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and and Medicine, Clinician Educator Track

Dr. Hardy is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics and infectious diseases, having completed her MedPeds training here at Brown, and her infectious disease fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She currently practices infectious disease and obstetric medicine at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, RI, where she is the Associate Director of Women’s Infectious Disease Consultation Services. Dr. Hardy’s research and clinical interests include infectious disease issues in obstetric and gynecologic patients, including congenital infection, complicated sexually transmitted infections, as well as outcomes, post-exposure prophylaxis and follow-up care of sexual assault survivors.

George Hardy, MD

Dr Hardy graduated from the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in 2005. He finished his med-peds residency in 2009 and followed this with a year as Pediatrics Chief Resident at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Since then he has been working in a med-peds private practice in Warwick, RI. He has 2 children and is married to a fellow med-peds graduate.

Robin Kremsdorf, MD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Clinician Educator Track

Robin Kremsdorf completed medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (Go Tribe!), followed by residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital / University Hospitals of Cleveland.  After residency, Robin spent 2 years moonlighting as a pediatric hospitalist and a home-visit doctor, and also raising her daughter.  She returned to her native West Coast to complete nephrology fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital.  During fellowship, Robin conducted clinical research relating to chronic kidney disease / mineral bone disorder, completed epidemiology coursework at the University of Washington, and had another daughter. She works as a pediatric nephrologist at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. 

Jerry Larkin, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine, Clinician Educator Track

Dr. Larkin is an infectious disease physician here at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. After completing his residency and chief resident year at Baystate, he went to Dartmouth to complete fellowship training. He is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics as well as adult infectious disease. He then moved to Rhode Island where he is a clinical assistant professor of medicine and co-director of the pediatric HIV Clinic at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Dr. Larkin has received numerous awards for teaching including multiple Dean’s Teaching Awards from Brown University. He has authored multiple publications and book chapters including articles on ticks, tick-related illnesses and Lyme disease in children and pregnant women. He is actively involved in advising for students, residents and fellows.

Carla Martin, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor of Medical Science

Dr. Martín is first generation Honduran-American and is originally from Brooklyn, NY, and Union City, NJ. She majored in Latin American Studies at Brown University. After graduation, she worked at the Latino Health Institute in Boston and coordinated and facilitated statewide bilingual HIV counselor training courses and the Massachusetts AIDS Educator certification program. She attended New Jersey Medical School. She served as the national president of the Boricua Latino Health Organization (the precursor to the LatinX Medical Student Association) and participated in local and national programs mentoring Latino high school students and was a member of the medical school’s admissions committee. She was a National Health Service Corps scholar. She completed residency training at Brown in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and is board certified in both specialties. She is also board certified in obesity medicine. 

Dr. Martin has always worked in socioecomically underserved communities, including the Providence Community Health Centers (where she works currently) in Providence, Notre Dame Ambulatory Center in Central Falls, Women’s Care in Pawtucket, and Blackstone Valley Community Healthcare in Pawtucket, RI. She embraces the mission of the community health center model.

She continues to mentor BIPOC medical students at Alpert Medical School and undergraduates at Brown University and serves as an advisor to the LatinX Medical Student Association. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Alpert Medical School, teaches first year students in their Doctoring course, and is on faculty at the Gateways to Medicine Masters program. She is planning to open an obesity treatment and wellness center in Providence.

Dr. Martin is honored to provide culturally appropriate medical care, partnering with patients and their families, and advocating to improve the overall health of the communities she serves.

Srilakshmi Mitta, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine, Clinician Educator Track

Dr. Mitta is a graduate of Brown University, obtaining her B.A. in history of art and architecture and her MD from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She completed an internship and residency in med-peds at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine where she earned the title of chief resident of internal medicine and pediatrics. She specializes in obstetric medicine and works at the Women & Infants Hospital’s Center for Obstetric and Consultative Medicine. She is also the assistant course leader of the Doctoring I & II course at the medical school. 

Leslie Mohlman, MD
Clinical Instructor in Pediatrics

Dr. Mohlman received her medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and completed her Med-Peds residency training at the Ohio State University Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Columbus. Dr. Mohlman specializes in both pediatric and adult medicine, and has worked as a primary care provider at Medical Associates of Rhode Island since 2004. 

Joel Park, MD PhD

Dr. Park rose through the ranks of Brown University starting as an undergraduate, getting a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Bachelor of Sciences in biology. Remaining at Brown, he attended what was then still called the Brown University School of Medicine in a combined MD/PhD program. His graduate work combined the fields of physiology, neurology, and immunology with his PhD dissertation on The TH2 Bias in CNS Immune Privilege. Continuing with the theme of pairs, he chose a postdoctoral pathway entering Brown’s Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program. After completing residency he stepped away from the role of a professional student and joined Rhode Island Hospital’s Internal Medicine Inpatient Service (IMIS). This program is the oldest hospitalist program in the state, and he became the first hospitalist in Rhode Island to become a dedicated nocturnist. For several years, aside from the ER staff he was the only attending physician actually in-house at Rhode Island Hospital. He often notes with irony that he has essentially become a professional intern for life, but with power! Outside of medicine, he lives in Barrington, RI, raising and supporting his 7 children.

Jack Rusley, MD MHS
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, Health Services, Policy and Practice

Dr. Rusley is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Department of Health Services, Policy, and Practice at Brown University. He is an attending physician in the Department of Pediatrics at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, and provides primary and specialty care to adolescents and young adults at the Adolescent Healthcare Center, the only adolescent and young adult-focused medical home in the state of Rhode Island. He completed med-peds training at the Maine Medical Center through Tufts University, and fellowships in clinical research at Yale and adolescent medicine at Johns Hopkins. His clinical and research interests include HIV prevention, substance use disorder prevention and treatment, improving primary care services for LGBTQ+ youth, and improving transition to adult care for youth with special health care needs.

Natasha Rybak, MD
Assistant Professor of Medicine, Clinician Educator Track

Dr. Rybak received her medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University as part of the Brown-Dartmouth medical program in 2007. She then stayed on at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to complete her residency in Combined Medicine and Pediatrics in 2011 followed by Fellowship in Combined Adult and Pediatric Infectious Diseases, which she completed in 2016. Dr. Rybak’s clinical and research interests are in global health with a specific interest in tuberculosis (TB), TB/HIV co-infection, and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) among adults and children in Eastern Europe. She helped to create the Brown University Ukraine Collaboration, a global health initiative program at Brown University to address TB-related issues, including TB/HIV co-infection and MDR-TB in Ukraine. She also serves as the Medical Director of the RISE Clinic at The Miriam Hospital, which provides specialty consultation related to TB care in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH).

Stephanie Tecun Favreau, MD

Dr. Tecun graduated from the Brown Med-Peds program in 2013.  Born in Boston, she grew up in Guatemala and returned to Rhode Island at age 9.  Adapting to the Rhode Island mentality (driving more than 15 minutes is considered to be a long trip), she stayed in the state for all higher education including residency.  After graduation in 2013, she was a Pediatrics Chief Resident at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and she transitioned to a primary care position in Warwick, RI, in the summer of 2014.  She enjoys the outdoors, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Beth Toolan, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Dr. Toolan was a member of the first group of graduates from the Brown University Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program in 1999. Originally from Cranston, RI, she received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. After reconsidering her life path, she entered the Brown post-baccalaureate program and graduated from the Brown University School of Medicine in 1995. She has worked at Providence Community Health Centers since she finished residency, originally doing both internal medicine and pediatrics, but after the birth of her second child she stopped practicing internal medicine in 2004, and continues to work as a board-certified pediatrician. She is thoroughly happy, working with the low-income, culturally diverse, vulnerable populations of Providence and its surrounding communities. She has served as a community mentor in Brown’s Doctoring Program since 2006, receiving the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011 and 2016.
