Burton Shen, MD

Position: Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics

Dr. Shen was born and raised in Boston, MA. He went to Harvard College where he majored in history with a minor in economics prior to attending Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. During residency, Burton was involved in multiple quality improvement and research projects, including enhancing nurse-intern communication on pediatric wards, improving diabetes management at the Med-Peds Primary Care Center, and developing a streamlined MICU order set with quality metrics. He has presented posters at the American Academy of Pediatrics and Pediatric Academic Societies, published in Hospital Pediatrics and the Rhode Island Medical Journal, and served as the Director of Professional Advancement with the National Med-Peds Residents’ Association (NMPRA) during residency. He was awarded the Rhode Island Hospital Pediatric Housestaff teaching award in 2019. He currently works as a Med-Peds Clinic attending, in addition to working as an ICU hospitalist at Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, and doing an ultrasound fellowship (2020-2021).

His interests outside of medicine include playing basketball and soccer, and rooting for New England sports teams. He is a season-ticket holder with the Boston Celtics. He and his wife, Aletheia, welcomed their first child in February 2019.
